What is GMAPLive all about?Welcome to GMAPLive, your personal map building tool. The goal of this project is to provide the average person with a user friendly interface through which they can add custom information to online maps. User can now add lines and markers to their own maps and attach information, including text and photographs, to those objects. Our attempt has been to make this web-application operate similarily to common desktop applications with limited page refreshes and a consistent interface.
So who is this designed for? Well, anyone from the small business person looking to put themselves on the map, complete with directions, nearest cash machine, etc..., to the traveler who wants to document their trip geographically, to party planners, real estate professional, hikers, and more.
We have tried to select some useful map samples and provided step by step instructions of how to build your own maps. If you have any suggestions of other helpful map samples we could add please send us your thoughts. We value feedback from our users so any feedback you have, good or bad, we'd like to here it. Feedback.
The Google Maps APIThe Google Maps API is a free beta service developed by Google which provides an interface through which developers can build online maps and map-based applications. It is available to anyone who meets their terms of use and signs up for an API key. The service was made availble in the summer of 2005 and has developed quite a following. With everything from real estate maps to hurricane maps, these 'mashups' have peaked alot of people's interest.
The official documentation is available from Google at the following url http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/ and you can sign up for an API key at http://www.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html.
Another great resource that reports on what's happening in the world of Google mashups is Google Maps Mania. It keeps track of the latest mashups, news and tools related to the Google Map API phenomenon.
Code StripperAll of the GMAPLive tools including PolyMaker, GeoMarker, and CustomMapBuilder have a code stripper feature. At any time, you can grab the code to re-create the current map, complete with all the polylines, markers, and info you've added. In order to use the map code on your site, you will have to get a Google Maps API key, but that's not difficult (refer to the Google Maps API section above for a link to get an API key).
The code stripper feature is meant to speed up the process of building online maps by providing an interactive graphical user interface through which you can add map elements. The ability to save, re-open and edit maps is only available to users who register (FREE). We hope you find it useful. Let us know what you think.
